On December 14, British superstar George Michael re-releases a new Christmas song, “December Song (I Dreamed of Christmas)”, his first fresh material since the new songs added to his latest greatest hits collection, 2008's Twenty Five. The song comes backed with three more yuletide tracks along with a brilliant animated accompanying video.
As previously reported, “December Song (I Dreamed of Christmas)” was released last Christmas Day as a free download on Michael’s website. Produced by George Michael and co-written by Michael and David Austin, the re-release comes as a limited edition EP complete with a digital booklet that includes a link to the video, song lyrics, exclusive photos from the video as well as a signed note from George Michael wrapped in festive Christmas card packaging.
The three additional songs include “Jingle”, a recently recorded track spawned from his latest studio work for a forthcoming album, as well as live recordings of “Edith & The King Pi” and “Praying For Time” captured at Abbey Road Studios and specially remixed and re-mastered for this package.
The digital version includes “December Song (I Dreamed of Christmas)” and “Jingle” only. Both versions are available for pre-order on George Michael’s official website.
December Song (I Dreamed of Christmas)
On this luscious new ballad Michael reminisces on Christmases past, as a child when the season meant more time to watch television, and as an adult when the season was spent with a very special person, now lost to him.
Without falling into the cliché of Christmas music, the song keeps its holiday sound to a minimum. If it weren’t for a choir singing “Happy Christmas” bookending the track, it could easily be mistaken for a new George Michael ballad.
“December Song (I Dreamed of Christmas)” marks the first time George Michael has recorded a Christmas themed song since his Wham! days. “Last Christmas” was recorded in 1984 and hit number 2 on the Official UK Chart. The song was blocked from hitting the top by the infamous “Do They Know Its Christmas” charity single the top artists of the day recorded as Band Aid.
Last Christmas Jingle
“Last Christmas” became a modern day classic and since the dawn of the downloading era has managed to re-chart every year in it’s original as well as cover versions by other successful artists.
George Michael, joins a host of other artists releasing Christmas albums and songs this year including fellow countrymen Sting, who serves up a sobering Christmas album If On A Winter’s Night, and The Pet Shop Boys who also release their Christmas EP on December 14.
The release announcement of Michael’s new song comes in the wake of his highly publicized interview with The Guardian Newspaper in the UK where he overtly discusses his drug use and sex life.
The four-track EP including “December Song (I Dreamed of Christmas)”is available now for pre-order on George Michael’s website.
