The 52nd Grammy Awards celebrates dance music with nominations going to Lady Gaga, David Guetta, Madonna, The Pet Shop Boys, Britney Spears and The Black Eyed Peas.

Lady Gaga and David Guetta received two dance award nominations at the December 3rd live telecast, while The Black Eyed Peas go head to head with Madonna and Britney Spears in the best Dance Recording category.

The nominations for the 52 Grammy Awards were announced amongst a lot of hoopla and fanfare with a host of colorful performers and presenters. Now in its second year, the nomination show serves up fresh renditions of songs made popular in the past year, aimed at garnering interest in the awards show and giving it’s nominees a chance to shine one last time before Christmas. But even with all the noise made about the show, the nominations have tended to skew on the disappointing or predictable.

This year, however, Grammy got off her rocker and hit the clubs for a spin around the floor scoring full points on most of the nominations in the Dance and Electronic music categories.

The Grammy Awards offer two groupings for dance music: Best Dance Recording, a single and track only category restricted to solo, duo, group or collaborative performances, and Best Electronic/Dance Album, an album only category. Tracks and albums with vocals or instrumentals are eligible for awards in these categories

Grammy Best Dance Recording 2010 Nominees

The single category contains two of the heaviest hitters on this past summer’s dancefloors. “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas may not have much to say lyrically but it secured a 12-week run at the top of the Billboard charts only to be replaced by the group’s follow up single “I Gotta Feeling” which clocked in another 14 weeks giving them a 26-week reign at the summit.

On the other side of the Atlantic, French DJ David Guetta teamed up with Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland to record the summer anthem “When Love Takes Over” which hit number one in the UK and sent the world dashing for the floor each time it was played. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga came out of nowhere to conquer both sides of the Atlantic.

Unlike past years where there was at least one clear forerunner, each of this year’s nominations could deservingly take home the trophy.

The full list of Grammy Best Dance Recording 2010 Nominees is as follows:

  • The Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow
  • David Guetta & Kelly Rowland - When Love Takes Over
  • Lady Gaga - Poker Face
  • Madonna - Celebration
  • Britney Spears - Womanizer

Grammy Best Electronic/Dance Album 2010

When it comes to albums, it seems Grammy doesn’t stay awake long enough to listen all the way through and could be accused of choosing winners based on whoever’s nearest her age. This year the dinosaur trophy goes to the Pet Shop Boys who receive a nod for their album Yes.

Having formed back in the early eighties, the boys have been spinning on the dancefloor longer than some of the other nominees have been alive. But their 10th release overall is as deserving of this award as was their first.

Along side the Pet Shop Boys, Lady Gaga and David Guetta received recognition for their brilliant albums The Fame and One Love respectively while The Crystal Method and LMFAO round out the other nominees in the category for Grammy Best Electronic/Dance Album 2010.

The full list of Grammy Best Electronic/Dance Album 2010 Nominees is as follows:

  • The Crystal Method - Divided By Night
  • David Guetta - One Love
  • Lady Gaga - The Fame
  • LMFAO - Party Rock
  • Pet Shop Boys – Yes

The 52nd Grammy Awards

The eligibility period for record releases to qualify for a Grammy nomination was between October 1, 2008 and August 31, 2009, shortened this year by one month in order to broadcast the awards show earlier in the new year, a time when many awards are handed out by other industries.

The 52nd Grammy Awards show will be broadcast live on CBS in the United States on January 31, 2010.
